At least I think I do. I don’t know. A transverse mounted pushrod small block is wierd.
Also I hate nascar.

Aren’t these things FWD like the Impala SS’s?

The last MCs were strangely attractive. Makes no sense considering GM just slapped a Impala front clip on the previous version Monte. Yet... It works.
Brb on Craigslist.

I bet they really really suck.

Impala Coupé

Impala, Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, Regal, Intrigue.
All W body chassis. 1988–2016. Finally dead. They were still producing the Impala Limited on it.

Those were supercharged V6's, right?
240 HP of fury. Boo.

260 by that time thankyouverymuch. And the SS had a 303 hp 5.3L V8

I saw a V8 Intimidator Monte at Barrett Jackson that sold for $30k. I thought it was pretty weird. So many cars that were much, much cooler sold for less!

Man, that thing loses all sporting intentions due to FWD. Maybe it’s just a good sporty looking cruiser.
I agree though, it looks nice. Oddly proportional.

But it's a W-body, which while sucky, is also ridiculously cheap. Avoid the base models and you could have a nice beater.

I liked the pre-facelift front end a lot more.

Haha. Fine, 260.
If I had to have one of those cars these days, I’d get the tried and true 3800 Series II. Yes, it’s 190-200hp, but it will run forever. I seem to remember those V8's having horrible reliability (plus annoying cylinder deactivation) and the Supercharged V6 wasn’t much better. I had a 97 Grand Prix and that thing ran despite me.

You don’t like them.
From that angle it doesn’t lool bad. In pictures. Walk up to one and its a different story.

I’ve been meaning to write a long piece about the W-body, the delusional grandeur of American exceptionalism, and its impact on growing up in the mid-west in the 90's-00's. I just haven’t had the time.

why do they smell?

Plastics.

Base models were better though, because you weren’t rebuilding transmissions constantly.

I doubt the 3.9 LTZ was tearing apart transmissions. I’d avoid the SS.
Generally, from years of browsing CL, you can get well optioned American cars for only a bit more than the rental grade base.
![]() 07/23/2016 at 09:21 |

Then again you could always buy a base model and pick up options you want from junkyards/salvage.

I had a 2001 Impala LS for a few years. It was pleasingly acceptable

I have always and will always hate these things, but different strokes for different folks.

Cuz I’m getting major uggo vibes here

But... the supercharged ones were a 3800 Series II...
![]() 07/25/2016 at 16:34 |

But they were late 90s forced induction. That isn’t exactly a recipe for success.

Other than the location of the fuel injectors, the compression ratio, and the supercharger slapped on top there really is no difference. Buick tuned them to within an inch of their lives and added aggressive knock retard for reliability, and as a result some of them make upwards of 300hp stock and they can be modded to put out ridiculous power fairly easily.
